La Plaça del Diamant (The Diamond Square), by Mercè Rodoreda, is the most translated Catalan novel of the 20th century. First published in 1962, it tells the story of a young woman from Barcelona set against the backdrop of the Second Spanish Republic, the Civil War, and the postwar period.

At the center of the story stands a real and still-existing location: the eponymous square in the Gràcia neighborhood. This former local village has undergone one of the most intense gentrification processes in Barcelona.

As an inhabitant of this area, I juxtapose the temporalities and places of this literary work with the experience of people currently living here. For this, I share several copies of the book with a group of residents from Plaça del Diamant, inviting each of them to read (or re-read) it and make it their own by freely underlining or annotating the text.

Based on nine readings, I create a new version of the novel that compiles all these markings and comments. Hence the echo: each page is multiplied by the number of readings, resulting in a sculpture of more than 3,000 pages.
