La estructura del vacío

This thesis develops the concept of an ‘active structural void’ through the work of João Vilanova Artigas. It focuses specifically on work from the 1950s to the 1970s, the period during which the group called the Paulista School was formed, made up of architects with shared interests who lived in the city of São Paulo. The particularities of the South American landscape, as well as the political and social situation in Brazil under the military dictatorship, led this group of architects to conceive an architecture that could enter into a dialogue with the place in both spatial and temporal terms. In this context, the ‘void’ corresponds to the space of the agora, developed by Artigas, the central figure of the Paulista School, as a dialogue between the territory and society.

In order to reflect Artigas’ architectural structure, the book is designed with text on the right pages, leaving the left pages for images. These are displayed in a free layout that creates voids, thus activating the research.
